Blogger's Comeback

I’ve neglected my blog. It’s awfully flakey, I know, but I’ve been quite busy. My internship at ELLE combined with my work at VARSITY (UCT’s Official Student Newspaper) as both Features Editor and the Editor in Chief of the digital style supplement going live in April left blogging quite low on the priority list.

And then it was announced that the second-year media students need to be blogging. After a frustrating week attempting to make Wordpress meet my visual needs, I’m back here.

I do love a good comeback (see Beyoncé by Patrick Demarchelier for VOGUE’s March 2013 issue) and I intend on making this one highly epic.

My new thoughts of fashion will be more fashion news related (Pappa needs those marks higher than a Minaj Starship) and less ohmygoshIlovethisVoguecover. And in case it wasn’t clear, I will not be covering fashion month in the same detail as I used to. Where my old posts were dedicated to showcasing the best of the fashion world, my new posts will combine that showcase with an investigation of these dynamic artworks came to be. A behind-the-outfit account, if you like.

So, strap in your Alexander Wang SS13 gladiator sandals. Like Queen B, I’ve had my baby (another digital magazine), taken my time off from public performance (this blog), and gotten myself back into tip top shape. Now it’s time to continue the quest for running the (fashion) world.

Two By Two. Louis Vuitton SS13

You can always count on Louis Vuitton to be the bit-budget cherry on top of the fashion month cake. This season Marc's girls made their entrances two by two down one of the four escalators that led to the yellow and white blocked runway.

Blocks. With this collection you don't have to choose between being there or being square, the inflated LV monogram allows you to be both.

We know Marc Jacobs has been feeling the sixties trend this season. Here, he confirmed it as one of SS13's most important looks, adding colour to what he showed in New York. Greens and yellows stood out gleefully, and even grey felt very spring when presented as a branch print on white separates. But it wasn't all colour - most of the show was still in black and white, (another huge SS13 thing) which was made masterfully feminine by the mod mood.

Jackets, coats, pants, skirts, tops, jumpsuits, dresses - the Louis Vuitton woman has so much to choose from this season. Whatever she picks, you know she'll be feeling super groovy.

Queen Bee. Alexander McQueen SS13

This is the biggest thing that has happened for the bee image since that animation movie that came out a few years ago. Sarah Burton gave us all access into her beehive - naturally it was amazing.

The emphasis was on the bust and waist: McQueen signatures. A screen in the background and a beehive-like floor marked a return to the late designer's show aesthetic. Sarah Burton has already proved herself to be a genious dressmaker, and now she's expanding her horizons to presentation as well.

You probably saw this coming, but fashion has found a new queen bee.
