Give The Shoulder. Balmain SS13

Balmain brought back the bold shoulder and paired it with high waisted trousers and hoop earrings. What a look!

This was the (90s) power woman at her most obvious. The workmanship what goes into those textured jumpsuits and tops never fails to make me gawk. And between those bold shoulders, bare ones seemed to have even more impact.

And then came the denim. I didn't see it coming but I couldn't be gladder that it did - it was a wearible and very accessible take on the collection that fitted perfectly into designer Olivier Rousteing's 90s vision.

A perfectly balanced collection then. And that's a notion that's stronger than even the boldest of bold shoulders.

From The Fairest Of Them All

After the premiere last night, hype is building for the new Charlize Theron and Kristen Stewart blockbuster, Snow White and the Huntsman. What does this have to do with fashion, you ask? Well, not only are our leading ladies on the covers of the world's leading fashion magazines, but the mood of the film picks up exactly where some of the AW 12 shows left off...

The darkness that consumes the promos immediately made me think of Gucci, and Kristen's armour points right to Balmain. So here they are: three outfits from each show. Take them as inspiration for what to wear when you watch the movie. (or what Kristen and Charlize might wear at the premieres)

Left: Charlize on the May cover of UK VOGUE. Right: Kristen on the June cover of UK ELLE.

And here they are at last night's premiere. Charlize looks incredible in Dior Haute Coture and Kristen looks, um, like that in Marchesa. I'm thinking she should have gone with a Balmain dress and me as a stylist.

The Balmain Armour: AW12

The Balmain woman is growing up – becoming more refined. Still, she hasn’t lost the boxy jackets and studded dresses that make her special. This collection also seemed to subtly touch on feudal times: deep medieval green and armour-like jackets suggest the Balmain girl has been fighting for our hearts for thousands of years.
