So who was the best dressed at the 2013 Met Ball? Here are my selections.
Dear reader who thinks that the Oscars is the biggest night in Red Carpet Style, I apologize for shattering your misconception. Every year, the Met Gala is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This year's exhibition is
Punk: Chaos to Couture and it's co-chaired by Anna Wintour, Rooney Mara, Lauren Santo Domingo of Moda Operandi and Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy.
The stars of Hollywood and fashion hit the red carpet at the Costume Institute Gala Benefit in the best designer clothing, usually making attempts to reference the theme in their styling. This year, that's what made a lot of the guests end up looking, well, just Google Madonna Met Ball 2013 and decide for yourself.
This is certainly not a Worst Dressed blog. I leave that to Joan Rivers. I'd rather focus on those lovely ladies who managed to find the perfect balance between glamour and punk, wearing the latest runway creations beautifully. Take Olivia Wilde (ABOVE) for example, she's wearing a very sleek Calvin Klein number, making rocker reference with the ring, bracelets, and (very on trend) showing of the midriff.
Anne Hathaway's hair is looking so much better like this! And those feathers on the sleeves of that Valentino dress seem to say "Punk goes to old Hollywood." Only a Valentino could make those two go together so nicely.
Model of the moment, (she's on British VOGUE's first-ever
Ms VOGUE cover) Cara Delevingne probably takes the Best Dressed title in my books with her custom Burberry. A perfect example of When Personality Meets The Perfect Dress, magic happens!
That sleek Stella McCartney dress evens out the spiked belt on Cameron Diaz. Note the nail polish as well. The recipe for glam punk is getting clearer and clearer: the secret is in the accessories.
Amanda Seyfried wears Givenchy by co-chair Riccardo Tisci. Nobody does dark romance quite like him. Lucky girl.
Gwen Stefani is punk. A crisp, very on-trend Margiela number compliments her perfectly.
Of course Jennifer Lawrence wore Dior. Proof that all-black and a studded heel is all you need to give yourself a little punk edge. Love the veil!
There's my favourite model in Louis Vuitton. A match made in fashion heaven, but not all that punk. As Edna Mode would say, "she'll look fabulous anyway."
How nice of Gatsby girl Carey Mulligan to endorse Alexander Wang's first Balenciaga collection. I think she looks fantastic, and this is a nice affirmation that Wang's first collection is wearing well on the red carpet.
There's Katy Perry rocking Dolce, crown and all. I think she should wear this dress forever - only she could make this ensable not seem over the top. Rock on.
Another example of Personality Meets Dress. Can you picture this number on Nicki Minaj? Only Emma could make this cut look wholesome. Even that punk-esque earring seems to work. Sure, Emma can wear it, but don't try this at home.
Rodarte and Elle Fanning are destined to be together. This dress looks fantastic on her! The make-up on the other hand... not so great. But we will forgive her: the theme is punk and there was worse situations around her.
How can I express my love for Sarah Jessica Parker's style? Most don't understand it, but they probably didn't understand Sex and the City either. There is only one way to describe this look: (in a Carrie Bradshaw voice) fabulous.
I saved the most important lady for last. Anna Wintour doesn't need to go punk - she's co-chairing the event. This Chanel gown may be a nod to the fact that Karl Lagerfeld is showing the Cruise collection tomorrow in Singapore - a guaranteed must see collection, this is turning out to be a very exciting week in fashion.
