The must-see Chanel Resort 2014 outfits.

Poor Dakota Fanning. Right after attending the party of the year on Monday in New York, she had to rush to catch her flight to Singapore so as not to be late for the Chanel Resort 2014 show. She'd have to deal with jetlag and all that, but it was worth it "to see Karl and all of his work."

I'm being mean. If that Feb 2012 British ELLE cover story is to be believed, Dakota is really nice and down to earth. It's just that I'm jealous. It's been a very exciting week in fashion: first the Met Ball, now Chanel, and I've been doing assignments involving news stories about South Africa's naughty government overspending on personal luxuries.

Let's rather talk about what Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel spend their money on - it's way more exciting. Lagerfeld never economizes - the last mid-season show was in Scotland, and now Team Karl has trekked over to Singapore.

The show opened with some strong references to Cricket, moving into laid-back knitwear, luxe denim, bathing suits, and light (I dubbed them shredder-chic) evening dresses. The best thing about Chanel resort collections is the way Lagerfeld takes materials like denim and pushed them into luxury status. These shows are always a lesson in "oh, I just threw this on" styling.

Talking about his inspirations, Lagerfeld says he did reference Singapore's heritage in the collection - though not nearly as much as he did with the Scottish one. He did minimal research and, here's the quote that that would make academics shudder and makes me love him to death, "you don’t get into the details, you reinvent the details." Epic.

The Singapore influences, most notably a nod to the tropical climate with the raffia dresses, were fused with that of Ms Chanel herself. Coco's masculine cuts and skirt suits were updated for the warmer weather. And the entire collection was had a sprinkling of pearls - Coco and Karl's joint obsession.

So why Singapore? According to style.com, Lagerfeld shrugged and answered that they'd been almost everywhere else. Well then, if Chanel is running out of exotic locations to show mid-season collections, why not try the top of Table Mountain in Cape Town? It's one of the world's seven wonders of nature, and I think it could certainly do with a sprinkling of pearls.
