Kristen For Collectors'

Hah! I tracked it down!

Here is the Kristen Stewart ELLE UK June 2012 collectors' cover. Love it (knew I would), LOVE the copy. I think that's Miu Miu she's wearing.... But I'll have to verify.

If you haven't seen the official Kristen cover, check it out HERE.

I've been anticipating this cover for a while now, and thankfully it didn't disappoint. Next month, Beckham.

Outfit Of The Day: Sunday

As much as I’ve enjoyed this whole outfit of the day thing, it’s been a bit scary to fit into my schedule. So I’m gonna give it a rest till next season. And speaking of rest: Sunday is finally here. But let’s be honest, your Sunday rest will probably include running around getting things ready for the coming week and finishing off things you didn’t have time to do up until now. So how to be active and stylish at the same time? The answer is easy… pants!

Sunday – Stella McCartney
Nobody does stylish/relaxed quite as well as Stella. These pants have a loose fit and a sporty feel which, along with the pop ofcolour, make them one of those items that can give you a fresh take oneverything in your wardrobe.

Other options: make a statement with your pants by wearing printor pattern and matching or clashing it with a shirt. How bold!

Outfit Of The Day: Saturday

In light of what Kristen Stewart is wearing on the new ELLE cover, and because I planned this post before I knew about it, today is a Jil Sander day. In his last collection for Jil Sander (he’s probably plotting Dior SS13 as I write this) Raf Simons brought out a softer side of the AW12 moody mood. Sure, pastels are it for spring, but they make so much more of a subtle and elegant impact for fall. Here’s how to make that statement.
Saturday - Jil Sander
A beautiful coat in soft powder pink over a nude dress and accessorised with metallic shoes – it’s that simple. A Jil Sander always is.

Other options: This look can easily work for eveningwear as well. Whether you’re on the dance floor (in that jumpsuit), or somewhere more elegant, all you need to remember is the simple equation: Soft colours + metallic accents = winter romance.

Are you in love yet?

#KristenELLE Is Here!

It’s finally here! Kristen Stewart covering the June issueof ELLE UKwas never a secret, thanks to the British ELLEs Belles letting us follow their#KristenELLE shoot on Twitter.

I have a personal attachment to Kristen ELLE UK covers: she was on the first issue of ELLE UK I ever bought.I remember that day quite clearly: tracking halfway across the mall to get to CNA(thus pissing off my father) and desperately searching for the collectors’cover (not yet knowing you had to subscribe to get it) instead of the main one.

But enough with the nostalgia. This time round, Kristen islooking crisp and romantic at the same time in a Jil Sander SS12 ensemble. Unfortunately, the collectors’ cover hasn’t leaked yet. You’ll know as soon as it does.

My Fashion Footprint

On Tuesday the new ELLE interns came to upper campus to do street style pics and hit the jackpot: my Art History tutorial class. See me (I'm totes flattered), my peers, and other stylish people on ELLE's new street style post HERE.

I've also just published a new Web Fashion article for Varsity newspaper. This one, a guide to Cape Town city style, was a group effort from the art students and the fashion writers - yours truly included. See it HERE.

Outfit Of The Day: Friday

The weather might not be very optimistic, but that's not putting damper on my much needed public holiday. I'm skipping town for a "relaxing" weekend in the country. The iconic inverted commas refer to the fact that I'll be working on assignments most of the time.

That said, no mater how busy we are right now, it's essential that we take some time for rejuvenation. Whatever you'll be doing today you'll probably be doing inside, so crank up the heaters and bring out your new winter dress. Don't have one yet? Here's some great inspiration from (you guessed it) London Fashion Week. (You'd swear they were paying me...)

Friday - Jonathan Saunders
I love this look because it's a great example of how you can take a potentially provocative dress and make it ready for a lunch with friends... Or parents in law. Adding a great formal shirt to a dress like this changes its function completely. You can even turn a summer dress into a winter outfit like this. So innovative.

Other options: bring some warm colours into your winter wardrobe with these...

Outfit Of The Day: Thursday

Assuming the weather channel is correct, it should be raining all day. I'm writing this under a partly cloudy sky on Jammie stairs, so I'm not too sure about the constant showers. For today's outfit, I'm assuming the drizzles are going to commence shortly. And when it comes to rain, there's a certain fashion house which, as of AW12, is an official authority.

Thursday - Burberry Prorsum

This is definitely the most hardcore raincoat of the AW12 season. It has that puffa look (now very in) and that essential flair after the belted waist. The Burberry raincoat rules are, quite simply: put a bow belt on it, and add studded gloves for edge. And now I'm thinking... It should rain more often.

Other options: sticking to the Burberry Prorsum example today, your other options for a rainy day is really anything as long as you accessorise with an umbrella. The Burberry ones came in solid colours and in stripes, but the thing that makes them special are those woodland creature/studded handles. Now that goes with just about anything.

Outfit Of The Day: Wednesday

So this morning I get to Hiddingh campus (in Gardens) and find out the Jammie busses are on strike and I have to be on Upper Campus (not in Gardens) in less than an hour. I'm wearing my beloved Zara coat (which I bought on 5th Avenue) for the first time in CT because I expect it to be raining (perhaps even thunder) later.

Regardless of the storm ahead, it seems to be unseasonably warm today. Somewhere along the trip to lower campus (thank goodness for friends with cars) followed by the epic walk to get to class on upper campus, I made a vow to my friends that, not matter how hot it gets (or how hot I'm getting from the extra walk) I will not take this coat off. Hence, today is a day for a coat: it will protect you from the storm, and since no one else is wearing theirs yet, make you stand out. Rule number one for wearing a coat on a day like this: make sure that whatever you're wearing under it is in a light fabric and can stand on its own as an outfit.

Wednesday - Chanel

It's one of my favourite outfits from the AW12 show. Note the clothes under the coat could easily stand on their own as an outfit - and none of them are very heavy. Perfect.

Other options: the best AW12 coats have a very earthy feel to them. Here are the hilights:

From left: Valentino, Missoni, Rodarte.

Tuesday 24 April 2012

Outfit Of The Day: Tuesday

As of tomorrow the weather won't be playing nice anymore. Today may be your last day to relax in the sun, but then there's still that chilly breeze. What to do?

Tuesday - Dsquared²

The best way to treat the schizophrenic weather is to wear something warm and fluffy like a sweater. When things get heated you can just pull it off. It's the perfect item for the season transition.

Other options: The AW11 chunky knit trend is big big big in SA right now. These stunners will have you in stitches.

From left: Stella McCartney, Rodarte, Missoni.

Outfit Of The Day: Monday

You know those stories in magazines where they dress a girl in the same jacket for like a month? I don't like them, but they've inspired this post. Every day this week I'll be picking out an outfit that suits the day and the weather here in CT. Cool? Cool.

Monday - Victoria Beckham

It's the day we'd all prefer to spend in bed. So although you're probably tempted to throw on something soft and comforting that makes you feel like you're in bed, I suggest something a little more structured to kick you (gently) into high gear for the week. And what better to do that than a structured (yet comfortable) dress by Victoria Beckham? It's easy to throw on and doesn't have any wild accessories that will blow away in the wind. And the best part? There's not a speck of blue in sight.

Other options. (aka backup looks)

I Got Published

At VARSITY, the official student newspaper of the University of Cape Town, I have been given the unofficial title of Web Fashion Coordinator. This means that I'm in charge or producing all the fashion related stories for the paper's website. I've got some really cool projects in the pipeline at the moment, but until they're ready for public consumption here are my works so far.

First, a review on London Fashion Week, AW12. My intense enthusiasm for LFW is no secret... so click HERE to feel the love.

And then there is the winter fashion TREND GUIDE: the the lovely Alicia Okeyo wrote the article about how to wear an outfit to suit your personal style, and I edited the fashion part. Although my name isn't actually on this one, it really was me. I'd swear it on a Prada SS12 shoe. (and if you've read this blod at all you'll recognise my tone on the image captions)

I do hope you enjoy them. I'm working on more - and loving every second of it.

The US May Covers: Rihanna and Scarlett

It's not easy to make a strong impact on a US ELLE cover - you're always gonna be up against a white background and smothered in copy - but Rihanna has managed to make quite the impression on their May cover. Now blond, the pop star looks fresh and fierce. Since I'm so good at making cover predictions these days, I'm willing to bet this story will land up in the pages of SA ELLE sooner than later. Can't wait!

And over in VOGUE land, Scarlett Johansson is looking lovely and serene on the cover of their annual city style issue. Scarlet, an ideal VOGUE cover star, can't help but look beautiful. I imagine the rest of the story looks brilliant too.

These issues, sadly, will only hit South African shores mid June... but I'm betting the'll be worth the wait.

A Shoe In On AW12

This season there aren't any shoes with leather flames on the back, but lightning doesn't strike the same please twice either. AW12 has produced some seriously loud statement heels, many of which are so meticulously crafted you could simply display on your mantlepiece... But what would be the fun in that?

My relationship with womenswear shoes is doomed because I can never wear them. Of course, it never hurts to look. These are the shoes worth looking at.

David Beckham Covers ELLE UK July 2012.

I was right! You're looking at the first solo male cover star in ELLE history. The other options were all pretty good, but when you're thinking of a British icon who's making his mark in fashion, Beckham seems to be the perfect man for the job. And seeing as the issue will be a celebration of the Olympics in London, it makes him even more suitable.

If you can't wait till May 30th (the cover release date) then you can follow @ELLEUK on twitter today for shoot updates and check out the ELLE UK website for more.

The Real Vogue Cover. (Onse Charlize!)

My previous post about the May cover of British Vogue was incorrect: it was only a supplement. The real cover star is in fact South Africa's very own Charlize Theron. Down in our corner of the woods she's covered Rooi Rose, Sarie, and Woman's Health all the in past couple of moths. For me, this cover wins by default. I mean it's Vogue, she's photographed by Patrick Demarchelier, and she's wearing Versace. And then there are the very beautiful images inside. Makes me feel rather patriotic.

ELLE MAN!

This is without a doubt the most groundbreaking cover news of the year. UK ELLE has announced that it is breaking its 26 year tradition and doing an all-male cover for the July 2012 issue.

The good news is, we won't be waiting much longer to find out who it is. Elleuk.com will announce his identity on Tuesday, and until then they've given us 32 options to speculate over. See the full story HERE.

I've managed to narrow those options down to 9, but I'm pretty sure I know who it's gonna be. Keep reading to find out.

Andrew Garfield and Daniel Radcliffe

Ryan Gosling and Alexander Skarsgard

Christopher Bailey and Robert Pattinson

Tom Ford and Orlando Bloom

All options considered, my money is on David Beckham. He's a British icon, and in light of his wildly successful underwear range with H&M and his wonderfully talented wife, he makes the perfect candidate for the first ever man to grace the cover of the world's biggest selling fashion magazine. If I were the editor, I'd pick him.

I will definitely update this story on Tuesday.

What I Wore

I was rather flattered to be snapped by one of UCT's street style bloggers last month. Check out my outfit below.

Banned Fashion

The UK is my number one destination when it comes to really great fashion magazines. It's also the place a fashion ad is most likely to get banned or almost banned... Sometimes for a good reason and sometimes for a very very strange one. Take a look at these...

Exhibit A: The David Beckham for H&M underwear campaign has narrowly escaped a UK ban as reported yesterday by UK VOGUE. Apatantly there have been three complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority saying that the images are not appropriate for children to see and quote 'offensive.' The ASA replied by saying the images are mildly sexual at best, and left it at that.

Exhibit B: The Marc Jacobs 'Oh, Lola!' campaign starring Dakota Fanning was banned because it was seen to sexualise a child. I've just recently done a 1800 word analysis on this ad (don't ask) and I must agree. The ad has a strong reference to the iconic novel 'Lolita' which is about a man who has a sexual relationship with his wife's underaged daughter. So we can safely say they had reason to can this one.

Exhibit C: Hold on your seats people... This Miu Miu AW11 ad was banned in the UK becuse it placed a child in a potentially dangerous position. The argument goes that because 14 year old Hailee Steinfeld is sitting on a train track and wiping something (perhaps a tear) out of her eye, that she is going to commit suicide. Now, I'm sure I don't need a 1800 word essay to prove that's being a little redicilous. Fact remains, it's banned.

So, if you were king or queen of the world, which of these would you ban?

Dakota Fanning: The Ultimate Cover Star

The February 2012 UK ELLE Dakota Fanning collectors' cover is arguably my favourite ELLE cover of all time. I thought it was the magic of Team Elle that made Dakota look so great, until I discovered some more utterly awesome Dakota covers. It seems she just has that something which, when combined with a great creative team, makes a stunning cover. Feast your eyes on these!
