Steal In Style

Trends you can find in your parent's closet.
When I encourage students to steal clothes from their parents closets in my new VARSITY article, I'm really just joking. (Or am I?) Whatever the case may be, it's always a little sad to talk about trends and not be able to illustrate them properly. So here I've gone and picked the fashion images that best evoke the trends I talk about in the article.

You want a visual feast? You got it!

The whole oversize thing may seem a little strange at first, but when executed correctly will look fantastic. The important idea is to find structured items - you want to make sure people understand you're not actually wearing something that's too big for you. If you understand the difference between oversized and too-big, you'll have this one down.

Double breasted. Photographed by Horst Diekgerdes for German GQ.

Specially for guys, this one is. It's the double breasted jacket or coat: a must-have for the winter season. My suggestion is to roll with the times and style this to Gatsby perfection. After all, the 20s aren't so far away.

Military. Photographed by Enrique Baduculescu for British ELLE November 2012.
Fashion editor: Anne-Marie Curtis.  Click to view full story.
Okay, so military isn't really a major trend for fall. More of a side trend. But if you've set foot in a mall lately, you'll know just about every store has a military jacket... probably with leather sleeves. The smart way to handle this kind of trend is to wear it as little as possible. And when you do wear it, make sure you wear it really well.

Luxe fabrics. Photographed by Mario Testino for British Vogue September 2012.

'Tis the season for luxe texture and fabulous fabrics. A more-is-more approach is key in pulling off this look. But when does more become too much? Only you can be the judge.
